A small torii, tucked into a corner of the shopping street. A hideaway shrine, within walking distance of the Peace Memorial Park.

商店街の一角にある、小さな鳥居。広島平和公園からも徒歩圏内の隠れ家的な神社です。

Step off the main arcade and you'll find a small shrine, wedged between the shops. No gate, no gatekeeper. It has stood here for over 260 years, and it never closes.

本通りから一本。店と店のあいだに、小さな神社があります。門も、人もいません。260年以上ここにあって、閉まることがありません。

Before you shop or eat — take a small detour through the red torii.

買い物や食事の前に、赤い鳥居へちょっと寄り道を。

You don't have to wish for anything in particular. This is a small sacred place to gather yourself, and then go on.

とくに願いごとがなくても、かまいません。ここは、気持ちを整えて、また歩き出す神聖な場所です。

The stone underfoot doesn't stop at the shrine — inside and outside, it's the same street.

足元の石畳は、神社で終わりません。中も外も、同じ通りです。

Step into 1589. Then take your time.

1589年へ。あとは、ゆっくり。

In 1589, Mōri Terumoto began building Hiroshima Castle. A fish market opened along the canal that ran through here. It was called Uo-no-tana — the fish stalls.

天正17年（1589年）、毛利輝元が広島城の築城をはじめました。このあたりを流れていた川沿いに、魚市場ができます。名前は「うおのたな」。

Later there were three markets in the city. This was the middle one. Naka-no-tana. The name never changed. Neither did the street's: it was already called Tatemachi in 1589.

やがて市中に魚市場が三か所でき、その真ん中にあったので「中の棚」。名前は変わっていません。通りの名前も同じで、1589年の時点で、すでに「たてまち」と呼ばれていました。

Researchers once traced an Edo-period plot map into a computer. It lines up with the street you are standing on.

江戸時代の地割図をコンピューターに取り込んで図面にすると、いま立っているこの通りの区画と、そのまま重なりました。

The shrine itself was destroyed in 1945, and rebuilt ten years later by local residents. The stone path you're walking has carried the street through all of it.

神社そのものは昭和20年（1945年）に焼失し、その10年後、地元住民の手で再建されました。いま歩いているこの石畳は、そのすべてを見てきた通りにつながっています。

The old fish market is gone, but the shopping street is still thriving today.

昔の魚市場は無くなりましたが、商店街は今も健在です。

Shops across five small lanes. Food, sweets, clothes, and the ordinary things a neighbourhood needs. Plenty stay open into the evening.

五本の通りに、たくさんのお店。食べもの、甘いもの、服、それから暮らしの店。夕方以降も開いている店が多くあります。

There are shops with real character here — appealing finds, and a few hideaway spots. Take as long as you like.

From the Peace Memorial, it's a 13-minute walk — or six minutes on the tram. It works out about the same. On foot you come out in the middle of the street.

平和記念公園からは徒歩13分。電車なら6分。待ち時間を入れると、だいたい同じです。歩くと、商店街のまんなかに出ます。

Coming back from Miyajima? The tram passes right through here. One line, no transfers — just get off at Tatemachi.

宮島からの帰りは、電車がここを通ります。乗り換えなし。立町で降りるだけです。
